Vestry Meeting Agenda

February 16, 2017

 

 

The meeting was called to order promptly at 6:30 p.m. by Don Anderson, Junior Warden who asked Fr. Bill to open the meeting with prayer.

 

Members Present:  Dave Abernethy, Treasurer; Don Anderson, Junior Warden; Charlene Connolly; Alan Cragg; Carol Diehm, Fr. Bill Faupel, Priest-in-Charge; Van Geoghegan, Yvon Hive; Lynn LaMarca, Peter Lund; Darlene Shoemaker. 

 

Members Absent:  Richard Breithaupt, Senior Warden, Bev Whiteman, Clerk

 

Item of Personal Privilege:   Yvon Hive was then given the floor to give the Vestry the highlights of his life story.   This presentation will be shared with the congregation in a future issue of St. Paul’s Pathway.  Don Anderson assigned himself to make his presentation at the March meeting.

 

Minutes & Financials:  Alan moved and Charlene seconded a motion that the January 19, 2017 and February 5, 2017 minutes and the January financials be approved as distributed.   The motion was unanimously approved.

 

New Business

 

  1. Fr. Bill welcomed the new Vestry members, and shared with them some of their responsibilities.  He also gave them booklets on the duties of vestries.    At the next meeting, he will give the copies of St. Paul’s Constitution and Bylaws.

 

  1. Dave Abernethy was officially appointed to serve as Treasurer for the year 2017.

 

  1. Having received her earlier consent, Bev Whiteman was reappointed to serve as Secretary of the Church and Clerk of the Vestry for 2016.

 

  1. Recommendation # 1

Alan recommended and Van seconded a motion that an Executive Committee, consisting of the Senior Warden, The Junior Warden, The Treasurer and The Priest-in-Charge be continued for the coming year.   The motion was unanimously adopted.

 

  1. Recommendation # 2

Van recommended and Yvon seconded the following motion: “Resolved that: 

 

a) the existing signatories on all bank accounts of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Naples, Florida held at Sun Trust be revoked;

 

b)  the following persons are authorized or re-authorized as signatories on all the accounts whose signatory authorities have just been revoked:  David W. Faupel (Priest-in-Charge), David Abernethy (Treasurer), Richard Breithaupt (Senior Warden), Donald A. Anderson (Junior Warden); except the account whose number ends in 691, currently subtitled “Discretionary Fund, Priest-in-Charge”);

c)  the following persons are authorized or re-authorized as signatories on the account whose number ends in 691, currently subtitled “Discretionary Fund, Priest-in-Charge”:  David W. Faupel (Priest-in-Charge), and David Abernethy (Treasurer);   

 

d) David Abernethy be authorized as signatory on the account whose number ends in 158, subtitled “Tennant Deposits”;

 

e) That the foregoing authorizations and re-authorizations are to the limit of authority for any authorized signatory under the Financial Policy of St. Paul’s; provided, however, that the Vestry understands the limitations of authority set forth in the Financial Policy of St, Paul’s are not binding upon Sun Trust; and

 

f)  the Priest-in-Charge, Senior Warden or Treasurer are authorized to certify to Sun Trust that this Vestry has this day adopted all resolutions in any format required by Sun Trust to implement the revocations and new and continuing authorizations set forth in the foregoing resolutions.  The motion was unanimously approved.

                       

  1. Recommendation # 4

Alan moved and Peter seconded a motion that: A) an Internal Financial Review Committee (colloquially an “Internal Audit Committee”) be established to review the 2016 financial statements and practices of St. Paul’s pursuant to our Diocese’s forms, and B) authorize the Treasurer to appoint the members to serve on the committee with the advice and consent of the Priest-in-Charge.

The motion was unanimously approved.

 

  1. Recommendation # 5

Van moved and Dave seconded a motion that that the Vestry adopt a document entitled: “Vestry Administrative Areas of Responsibilities February 2017-January 2018.” as their respective assigned areas of responsibility.  The motion was unanimously approved.  The document appears as (Appendix B) with the official copy of these minutes.

 

Updates:

  1. Christian Formation: Charlene reported that Adult Formation class “The Spirituality of Intimacy” led by Fr. Tad and his wife Ann has been well attended and its contents highly praised.  The class starts at 9 a.m.

 

Charlene and her husband Tom, have been teaching a children and youth class respectively, on Sunday evenings.  The classes are growing slowly.   Charlene also teaches the Sunday morning children’s class.  She has nine children who attend on a semi regular basis.   She needs additional helpers.

 

  1. Communications: Darlene in consultation with Barbara Kling, Communications Chair, reported that 1) St. Paul’s Pathway will be published bi-monthly from now on; 2) The Pictorial Directory is coming along well.   Final pictures will be taken this Sunday.  It is hoped be ready for distribution by the end of March. 3) The INVITE mailings, that go to 100 persons each month who have recently moved to Naples has been stopped.    We are unaware of any one who has attended St. Paul’s in response to this invitation since the start of this program last July. 4)  Finally, the Communications Team want to publicly thank Deb Avery and Tom Connolly for the heavy use the Team makes of their Computer Skills.

 

  1. Farmer’s Market:   Don reported that Farmer’s Market is thriving.   Near record attendance has occurred during the last several weeks.   New volunteers have come since signing up at January’s “Ministry Fair.”    Still more are needed.   The monthly Pancake Breakfast continues to be a highly popular event!

 

  1. Property:  Alan reported that the property is in basically good shape thanks to the constant attention of God’s Gardeners.   A tree root broke a pipe in the sprinkler system which had to be repaired.  Budget permitting, consideration is being given to resurface the parking lot this summer.  He finally reminded the vestry that the church’s roof has exceeded its life expectancy by two years.

 

  1. Jubilee Committee: Alan reporting for Dick stated the Jubilee Committee continues to meet. The February Jubilee Baked Goods event was a great success with 77 items taken to St. Matthews House, Grace Place, the Salvation Army and the Home for Abused Women.   Two Jubilee dinners were held:  one in January hosted by Tom and Charlene Connolly and featuring our outreach to the Albergue and one in February hosted by Van Geoghegan featuring Italian cuisine March’s project will be securing 50 pints of Blood.   The project will finish on Saturday, April 1 when the Blood Mobile will come to Farmer’s Market.   The next Jubilee event is on Sunday, February 26 when Fr. Dwayne Varas, former Associate Rector of St. Paul’s will speak at a catered luncheon following the Sunday morning services.

 

  1. Worship:  Fr. Bill reporting for Bev. Whiteman stated that a Worship Committee consisting of two members who attend the 7:45 a.m. service, 4 members who attended the former 9:15 a.m. service and 4 members who attended the former 10:45 a.m. service.   Their first meeting will be Monday, February 20 and they will meet weekly to develop the new 10 a.m. service which will be implemented the first Sunday in May.    Fr. Bill plans to announce details of the new service to the Vestry at their April meeting.

 

  1. Congregational Integration:  Yvon was asked to consult with Fr. Panel and other leaders of the 5:00 p.m. congregation to see if a joint service and picnic can be held at the breach some Sunday next summer.    He is to report back at the next meeting.

 

  1. Finally, Fr. Bill reported that we received a $10,000 check from a parishioner this week to be put in St. Paul’s endowment fund.

 

  1. The time of the next meeting was set for 6:30 p.m., March 1 in the Church Library.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 with the Vestry saying the Lord’s Prayer.
