Vestry Meeting Minutes
February17, 2022
The vestry meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Fr. Tom, in the library of Serson Hall.
Members Present: Fr. Tom, Rector; Peter Lund, Senior Warden; Joyce Cashin, Junior Warden; Nora Broszeit, Treasurer; David Abernethy, Judy Allen, Richard Breithaupt, Steve Carnell, Van Geoghegan, Judy Martin, Rich Shea and Don Anderson virtually.
Fr. Tom opened the meeting with a prayer for the Venerable Kathleen Moore who has been an archdeacon in our diocese for many years.
Minutes: Joyce Cashin moved that the January 30, 2022 annual meeting minutes be approved and Nora Broszeit seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved.
Financials:
Richard Breithaupt made a motion that outreach become the focus of our work as a church. Discussion followed regarding ways to increase our revenue during 2022. He suggested that a subcommittee be formed to address fundraising for planned outreach. Richard made a motion to add an Outreach Expense line to our budget. Following a discussion he agreed on the amount of $15,000. Nora Broszeit seconded the motion. The motion passed with Dave Abernethy declining.
The 2022 budget was presented to the vestry with a $54,135 deficit. Joyce Cashin moved that the budget be approved, and Nora Broszeit seconded the motion.
Controller Status: Virgil Manuel and his wife will be moving away from Naples. While a search is on for his replacement, Nora Broszeit volunteered to make bookkeeping entries and work with Virgil remotely. St. Paul’s will advertise for a new controller.
Investment with State Street: Dave Abernethy announced that poorly performing CD’s would be exchanged for State Street eCFM which will give us a liquid instrument a with better return.
Rector’s Report:
1. Vestry Retreat has been scheduled for March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, at 5 p.m. in Serson Hall.
2. A Story Telling Event will be scheduled for January or February 2023. Betty Lentz has inspired this fun event. Later a planned Outreach Festival is envisioned with the community.
3. April’s Vestry meeting has been moved to April 28, 2022.
4. Fr. Tom’s Tentative Vacation Plans: Easter week, four weeks and five Sundays in May, July days, a September week, and October days.
Other Reports:
1. Joyce Cashin finished getting quotes to replace four windows in the rectory. Rich Shea moved to have four windows installed and Judy Martin seconded. The motion was passed with Richard Breithaupt abstaining from the vote. It will take 16-20 weeks to order the windows.
2. Vestry was eager to thank Van Geoghegan and ECW for using money earned from the Courtyard Gift Shop and Unique Boutique toward annual Outreach Giving every year in the past.
3. Fr. Tom suggested that parishioners volunteer at a Job Fair hosted St. Paul’s and Trinity by The Cove Episcopal Church on March 24. It is a daytime event where Trinity partnered with a group aiming to get jobs for unemployed or underemployed parents. Children from these family’s risk being sent to foster care because of lack of funds.
4. Fr. Tom resolved to put together a Vestry-signed and framed resolution in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the founding of God’s Gardeners. This group of volunteers have dedicated their time to keep the campus of St. Paul’s beautiful and welcoming.
5. Steve Carnell reported from the committee team for Pathways. There will be a pre-Lenten issue with Peter Lund, Senior Warden, profiled. Goals set for Pathways features in 2022 will include outreach. Steve is enthusiastically starting small groups to meet during Lent. Sign-up sheets will be out for names of interested parishioners. The groups will meet for 5-6 weeks, and discussion groups will focus on Fr. Tom’s homily each week.
6. Joyce Cashin asked the Vestry for interest in having another golf outing for parishioners and friends later in the summer. She organized the first annual outing before Covid interrupted our time together. She was given a go ahead to look into a date and place for the next golf outing.
7. A reminder was given to help advertise the upcoming Jodie DeSalvo piano concert at St. Paul’s. Eleanor Phelps arranges for fundraisers and this concert will be wonderful to attend on March 22 at 7 p.m. in the church.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:16 p.m.
The next Vestry meeting is a retreat beginning at 5 p.m. March 17 in Serson Hall.
