Psalm 95.10: Forty years long I detested that generation and said, "This people are wayward in their hearts; they do not know my ways.”
This is a disturbing verse. The word translated detested is a very strong verb. I check three separate Hebrew translations and they rendered the verb, provoked, loathed and wearied; although the notes on the last translation notes that the verb is a very strong verb and suggests a better translation as disgusted.
Today is Ash Wednesday one of the two most penitential days of our year, the second being Good Friday. Though I am not one who traffics in guilt, at times it is important for us to take stock. Today I ask myself if there is anything in my life that is provoking or wearying to God. Is there anything in my life that God loathes? O that there is nothing that disgusts God.
